Countrysprout / Morning Sun Gardens

Maryanne and Bruce Chrisman went back-to-the-land back in the late 70’s. They grew for to the Carbondale Farmers Market and also kept the region supplied with "countrysprout" alfalfa, radish and lentil sprouts year round. As their family also sprouted, they took on "straight" jobs and the deer celebrated their absence by eating their crops in earnest. They stopped market gardening and gave up their seasonal spot at the CFM.

Now they have both "rewired" from SIUC and have once again taken up the tractor, the hoe and the newspaper under the mulch, but this time with eight foot high deer proof FENCING. The acres that used to be mowed are now nurturing melons, corn, cukes, beans, peppers, tomatoes and blackberries alongside potted and cutting flowers, herbs and shrubs.

Recently, the “sprout room” was transformed into a “skin room” where they create small batches of raw, organic, real skincare, body balms, and fragrant oils (some say, also good enough to eat).

Look on the east side of the depot for their eclectic collection of eco-grown produce, plants, cut flowers, skin care and hand-painted Czech glass files, (which are unmatched for nail care but have been challenging for Maryanne to learn how to paint!). In the coming years, they are determined to improve soil fertility such that produce can not only nourish but also sustain vibrant health. They are absolutely committed to the Friday Night Fair's mission to celebrate LOCAL, whether it be families, students, musicians or crafters and eco-conscious growers. They welcome you to check out their webpage, albeit under construction: www.countrysproutskin.com. Most of all, they encourage you to also get moving and get growing!
